WE may rarely hear about meningococcal disease, let alone know the meaning and the information even though it is very dangerous and can be life threatening.

Report World Health Organization (WHO) show that more than 500,000 people are infected with meningococcal disease in the world which resulted in 50.000 deaths per year.

A total of seven patients with meningococcal killed while one of five former patients who have serious and permanent side effects such as limb amputation, seizures, paralysis, loss of hearing and ability to learn.

Meningococcal is a major cause of bacterial meningitis, an infection of the membrane that covers the brain, spinal cord and blood vessels can cause death.

The disease could spread quickly in the patient's body and become serious and can cause death within just 24 to 48 hours even if given early treatment.

More disturbing, often infecting meningococcal previously healthy even though they only make a slight change in activities such as pilgrimage, visiting nightclubs, travel, smoking, entering college and a military assignment.

Novartis Medical Director, Dr. Adelina Cheong said, Menveo is a new and innovative vaccines are developed by combining antigen polysaccharide in which it allows the body to act against meningococcal infection.

"This vaccine is the best antidote to prevent meningococcal infection. Besides Malaysia, it is also approved in the United States (U.S.), European Union, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore.

"The main risk for this disease and Umrah pilgrims as they are in crowded places, and surrounded by millions of pilgrims from 140 countries for a long period of easy they are infected.

"Menveo not only suitable for individuals as young as 11 years old and adults, is safe and effective, but also to obtain the halal certification in Malaysia, Indonesia and the U.S.," he said.

He said this when addressing the launching ceremony in Kuala Lumpur Menveo vaccine, recently.

Adelina said, another group of individuals at risk of meningococcal infection are those who visit the slum, where a new immunity or lack of such visitors disco, smokers, travelers, teens, students and military personnel. -
